Review by: Kaysa J.
Have you
ever been called names? By the people in your school? Even the preps maybe?
Well, this book is called Does My Head Look Big in This? By Randa-Abdel Fattah.
This story takes place in Australia, in a very small city in Australia. This
book is about a girl name Amal. She lives with her mother, father, and brother.
Amal is an Australian-Muslim. She wears the hijab to school, every day of
school is a nightmare for her. Every day her classmates would always make fun
of her calling her a terrorist. The preps would always gossip and say “oh look
it’s the girl with the towel on her head”. Would you ever imagine yourself
being said names to? How would you feel? Will the preps stop calling her names?
I loved
this book. This book teaches me how to be confident in myself, and being proud
of the way Iam. Amal is a great role model for being a Muslim to where there
aren’t many Muslims. What I like about this story is that this story is like
a reflection of my life. Everything that happens in story is basically the
things that happened in my life. In this book I can relate to Amal in various
ways. We both wear the hijab to school, and we both somehow get called names.
This book just reminds me of my first day wearing the hijab to school, it was
very nerve racking. I recommend people to read this book, who are going through
the same thing or who would love to know more about what life is like for Amal.
