In the book, The Secret Life of Bees, there is a girl named Lily who has no mom but she has a dad who is mean. One day Lily puts all of her moms stuff out in the back yard and she went there to look at it, but then the mean dad, T-Ray, came outside.  He thought that she was with a boy, so he punished her. Lily had a maid in her house who was black. (this was the segregation times) Anyway she was really nice, but one day Lily and Rosaleen, the maid, were walking and  these white people came and said to Lily is she a smart ni**a or a stupid ni**a, and then Rosaleen, the maid, poured tobacco juice and spelled her name. Then the white guy punched her. Then Lily’s dad came and picked her up, but when T-Ray and Lily went home Lily immediately went to her room. She then pulled out a map, and ran away to the prison hospital where Rosaleen was. Then they escaped to a black women house, Lily’s mom went to that house but Lily did not know so Lily and Rosaleen went there and worked there, Lily was working with the bees and Rosline was a house cleaner so when time passed Agust said look Lily your mom came here to just like you Lily stayed quite and said why didn't you tell me this she said i did not wanted to make you sad so then after that T-Ray found where Lily was then he said you are coming with me Lily said no this is my home then T-Ray slapped her and then August came and said she is with us and then T-Ray said ok  live with these black people and he left, Lily went and followed him and said stop did my mom leave me or she was coming for me and then T-Ray said no she hated you and left. but then Lily knew that T-Ray was lying and then she lived happly ever after.
