Ten Things I Hate About Me by Randa Abdel-Fatah

Review by Marissa D

Have you ever really thought about what goes on in other countries? Well neither did I until I read this book, "Ten Things I Hate About Me".  The country is Australia and in this book it displays racist acts and the struggle of a Lebanese-Muslim girl named Jamilah.  Her struggles include her class mates not knowing her true background and religion and her fear of her friends knowing.  As her high school years go by she realizes that keeping her secret is becoming harder and harder and telling her secret now would be very difficult for her.  However as the days go on she is more determined to share her background, but she is very aware of how racist her classmates can be and that's what is holding her back.

I really liked this book because Jamilah's struggles and her strength to listen to racist remarks from friends is very over powering.  Also she is constantly struggleing to find the streangth to show who she really is. This book helped me realize that if you are hidding background information, it would make you feel better if everyone found out insead of hidding it even longer.  Eventhough its hard to tell a secret about your background especially if you've been hidding it for a while, you should just tell your friends and slowly work your way up to other classmates.
