Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins

Review by Sarah P.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live in another country, perhaps in a war zone? Bamboo People by Miltali Perkins is just the book for you. This book is written from the point of view of a well educated burmese boy and a Karreni boy. These two boys, Chiko and Tu Reh come from completely different backgrounds, one a city boy, whose father was arrested for being against the oppressive government, the other a hard working farmer with simple dreams but carries a hunger for justice and revenge against the Burmese Army. The pair, both from opposing sides learn to bond despite their differences and previous assumptions about the others cultures.

I loved this book! It’s a quick read but tells a story of strong compassion and strength. It’s many characters are witty, funny, and have real depth. I strongly recommend this book to readers beginning to want more serious books about current events.

Honorable Mention:
Divergent by Veronica Roth
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
