Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

                Reviewed By Sepahn Chiloyan

What would you do if you were in a plane by yourself and your pilot started to have a heart attack and you ended up crash landing in a deserted forest in Canada? Hatchet is my favorite book for many reasons. Hatchet is about a boy named Brian whose parents are divorced and Brian lives with his mom in New York. Brian wants to visit his dad in Canada so he flies to Canada and on his way there he crash lands in a deserted forest, and now it is up to him to survive. The protagonist in the story is Brian and the setting is in Canada.

I liked this book for many reasons. One reason I liked this book is because it was very believable and realistic. I know this because he uses real survival techniques that you would use in real life. One technique he used was that on page 86 Brian says Another set of strikes, more sparks. He leaned and blew, but gently this time, holding back and aiming the stream of air from his mouth to hit the brightest spot. Five or six sparks had fallen in a tight mass of bark hair and Brian centered his efforts there. This style of writing and book reminds me of Boy Scouts and adventure. adventure because while Brian is in the woods he has an adventure and learns to do many things. It reminds me of boy scouts because when Brian was stuck in the woods it reminds me of camping and Boy Scouts also do a lot of camping. The theme of this book is survival. These are some of the reasons of why Hatchet is my favorite book.
