The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Giver, By Lois Lowry
Review by Lisa M. *****

Imagine what it would be like to live in a world without war or suffering, where no one ever has to feel pain or loss -- place where everyone is treated with absolute equality. Think it would be wonderful?  Think again. This is the world of Jonas, a 12 year old boy who lives in a futuristic community where everything is controlled. But it is a world without color, love, passion or individual choice or even memories. It is a prison where no one can live a real life.  Jonas, alone, knows this and tries to change it.

This is an amazing book. READ IT!  It brings to light so many themes, such as the importance of memory, and how individual choice is more important than absolute fairness. It makes you think…really think about what is important in life.  In a way, it reminds me of The Hunger Games, in that it is set in a dystopian, futuristic society, but the story line is more subtle.  I think this book would be interesting to anyone, no matter what kind of book you like.

  1. I loved this book, too! The part that stood out to me was about the families -- I couldn't believe that no one knew their grandparents. It seemed like such a cold, disconnected society. I actually thought it was more like A Brave New World than the Hunger Games. I give it 5 stars, too.
